INTRODUCTION: 1st Baptist Sutherland Springs, TX // Background
1 Corinthians 1:1–2 ESV
Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
1 Corinthians 15:1–11 ESV
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

The Christian faith HINGES on the resurrection of the dead.

Look again at vs. 1-2 :: Paul says the gospel/the good news is that the dead are raised - that Christ has been raised and that we will be raised! The good news is that death is dead!
vs. 2 - past, present, future - you received, you stand, you are being saved.
FIRST IMPORTANCE
Paul says that the resurre

Jesus’s Resurrection SUBSTANTIATES His Claim to Deity.

1 Corinthians 15:12–15 ESV
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.
“preaching in vain, faith is in vain, misrepresenting God.”
I want to put this as plainly and simply as I know how - if Jesus Christ did not rise from the dead, He is NOT the Messiah, He is NOT God and we should all go home right now.
“According to the Scriptures” - the Old Testament speaks of the coming Messiah - God’s Savior - as the One who would suffer, die, and be raised to life.
Psalm 16:9–10 ESV
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then he did not fulfill Scripture, and therefore He is not the Messiah. You can make all sorts of intellectual arguments for the deity of Jesus but they all fall apart if he didn’t rise from the dead. If he didn’t rise from the dead, then that means death conquered HIM.
However…He did, and he appeared to over 500 eyewitnesses.

Jesus’s Resurrection SEALS My Salvation.

1 Corinthians 15:16–17 ESV
For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
This is a pretty strong statement, isn’t it? Again, EVERYTHING hinges on the resurrection.
“I thought it was the cross that saved me!?!?!”
Substitutionary Atonement - the cross - Jesus bore the wrath of God for our sin. He was the slain lamb. He was the sacrifice.
The resurrection, then, is PROOF positive that God is fully satisfied with and has accepted the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.
Romans 4:23–25 ESV
But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Romans 4:25 ESV
who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Romans 4:

Jesus’s Resurrection SECURES My Hope.

1 Corinthians 15:18–19 ESV
Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
Not a single person on earth can escape death. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, how healthy you think you are, what kind of diet plan you’re on, how technologically and medically advanced we get, we all die. It’s the result of sin - it’s the curse we’re under because of our sin. DEATH CAN’T BE STOPPED.
But, here’s why the gospel is such good news. The apostles and the early church didn’t make the mistake of stopping the gospel at just asking Jesus into your heart and going to heaven when you die. They understand - we must understand - that the gospel is much richer, much deeper, much more powerful than that. Their hope wasn’t just in that Jesus rose from the dead and they go to heaven — their hope was that BECAUSE JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD, THEY, TOO, WOULD RISE FROM THE DEAD. That’s OUR hope.
1 Corinthians 15:20-
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 ESV
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
“Firstfruits” — refers to a first sample of an agricultural crop that indicates the nature and quality of the rest of the crop. Therefore, Christ’s resurrection body gives a foretaste of what those of believers will be like.
Jesus - headship - representative of the human race…Adam’s representation.
We will be raised...
What will these bodies look like?
1 Corinthians 15:42–44 ESV
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
1 Corinthians 15:
1 Corinthians 15:45–49 ESV
Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:24–28 ESV
Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
1 Corinthians 15:24-2
1 Corinthians 15:50–52 ESV
I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:53–55 ESV
For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
1 Corinthians 15:50-
1 Corinthians 15:
1 Corinthians 15:56–57 ESV
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Death will be swallowed up:
Isaiah 25:6-
Isaiah 25:6–7 ESV
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations.
Isaiah 25:8–9 ESV
He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”
1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

The good news of the Gospel is resurrection. It is a reversal. Instead of Adam stammering from his hiding place and looking back at angels with flaming sword, we have the Son of God thundering out and angels announcing the miracle as they had in the skies above Bethlehem. This is a new day.
